Visiting our city in July? These are the must attend events that are coming up over the following month. Hold onto your sunscreen, as it’s really heating up this summer in the city.
Independence Day
Independence Day is one of the biggest holidays of the year and our capital is the best place to celebrate it. Parades, parties and events happen all over the city and you wouldn’t want to miss any of them. Even the historic areas of the city, like the National Archives and Capitol Hill, will have some form of celebration for the day. Whether you head to the parade on Constitution Avenue or just enjoy the fireworks, you’re bound to have an amazing time.
Experience the Smithsonian Folklife Festival
The Smithsonian loves bringing history to life at the annual Folklife Festival in July. It’s totally free for attendees and kids always have a wonderful time all weekend long. This particular event is all about looking back at what makes culture so relevant in the present day. Expect dancing, fancy dress and even folk singing to make for a fantastic weekend of fun and learning. If you’re looking for gifts to bring back from the city, then there will be plenty handmade gifts and trinkets to purchase.
Catch a Nature Walk
Each day in Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, their park rangers will take you around the landscape at 2pm. These helpful and knowledgeable rangers love to share their passion with visitors which makes for an excellent day. Take your time and learn about nature or have a picnic in the park – just remember to throw your trash away. You’ll even be able to see some little animals and fauna that make up the ecosystem of the park.
Visit a Rooftop Bar
When the sun is shining, it’s great to be able to sit outside and enjoy it. There are lots of rooftop bars and restaurants located in our city, each with their own party atmosphere. Some of them even have pools for their patrons to cool down in, though we don’t recommend drinking alcohol and swimming. Whether you want soul food and cocktails or classic American cuisine with beers, eat al fresco and love the weather. Some of these bars are also located near famous sites, such as Embassy Row, and offer brilliant views.
Splash in the Potomac River
If you love being on the water, then the Potomac River will be your ideal spot to hang out. You can cruise, kayak or even paddle at the side of the river and the Tidal Basin. As you head up the river you can see the birds and fish that make this area their home. If you’re heading out on the water, then be sure to take adequate sun protection, as the splitting heat can be too much in the middle of the day. A sun hat and waterproof cream are essentials for any day spent out in the baking heat of the summer.
