You might not think of our capital city as a haven for nature lovers but looking beyond the city centre will reward intrepid travellers with some stunning views. Yards Park is an excellent place to spend a few hours getting some fresh air and the food vendors offer such varied cuisines. It’s a cross between a walk and a dining experience so it’s perfect for those food lovers in your life.
The National Capitol Columns are worth the trip too, as these historic landmarks have made quite a journey to get to where they are today. The stone that makes up the columns was quarried from Virginia in 1828 and the sheer size of them is impressive.
For the history aficionados out there, the Gray Line DC Gettysburg tour that leaves from Union Station takes patrons on a trip through the wonderful Pennsylvania countryside. This is ideal for visitors that would like to visit the areas of historical significance where the battle that turned the tide of the war was fought. This tour includes a stop at the Visitor’s Centre before a two hour tour of the battlefield, led by professional tour guides who have plenty of knowledge about the battle.
If you’d like to see all of the city’s beautiful Cherry Blossoms in bloom before the winter you can view these at the East Potomac Park. This park is a hidden gem in Washington DC and it looks amazing when these Japanese trees are in season, though there are activities here year round.
The George Washington Memorial Parkway is another must see for those who want to take in the sights. This gorgeous park lines the river so visitors can enjoy the sun setting over the water or just enjoy the sounds of the water going by. It’s so close to the bustle of the city but it’s like another world entirely when you get there. If you’re getting tired of the crowded centre then come here to take a break.
The Capitol Riverfront area isn’t far from here so it won’t take long for you to head over there after this park to get you back into the city mood. This up and coming new neighborhood is very different to the inner city and can be a refreshing change for visitors.
