Once onboard, we will Depart the Nation's Capital for the State of Virginia, where we begin our adventure with a visit to Old Town Alexandria!
Dating back to the early 1700s, Old Town Alexandria played a significant role in early American history. However, it is mostly known for being the adopted hometown of America's first President, George Washington. We will provide an in-depth overview of the town's historical facts, and show you its cobblestoned streets lined with historic buildings. We will visit Christ Church, where both George Washington and Robert E. Lee, had regularly attended services.
After exploring Old Town Alexandria, we will depart for George Washington's Mount Vernon. The 10-mile journey to George Washington's former estate will take you along the scenic Potomac River, where you will learn the importance it had during the era, all while viewing some of the regions' scenery and sites like the 200-year-old Fort Washington.
Once at Mount Vernon, you will gain access to the estate. The entrance onto the grounds of Mount Vernon includes a host of colonial-era buildings, beautiful gardens, and a working distillery and gristmill. The estate's Museum and Education Center feature hundreds of artifacts, movies, a 4D theater, and an interactive theater that introduces visitors to the real George Washington.
After exploring the grounds of George Washington's Mount Vernon, we will start the journey towards the hallowed grounds of Arlington National Cemetery. Arlington National Cemetery is located on a 600-acre parcel of land that once belonged to George Washington's step-grandson, George Washington Parke Custis. In 1857, Custis left the property to his daughter Mary Anna Randolph Custis, where it became the family home for her and her husband, Robert E. Lee.
Since its first military burial on May 13, 1864, Arlington National Cemetery has become the final resting place for more than 400,000 active duty service members, veterans, and their families. Gray Line's Arlington Cemetery Tour includes entrance and an interpretative tour of the grounds with stops near the Kennedy gravesites and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where you can observe the changing of the guard ceremony.
Arlington National Cemetery is an enduring tribute to those who've dedicated their lives to defending the ideals of our nation. A visit here will leave an indelible impression on your spirit.
